Pilates is a method that was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. He was a child with fragile health, but that did not prevent him from practising different sports, such as yoga, boxing, escrima, building and gymnastics.

During the First World War, he was interned in a camp near Lancaster with other German citizens, where he organised exercise and fitness sessions. It was then that he developed the Pilates method.

After the war, Joseph Pilates emigrated to the United States. During his boat trip, he met his future wife Clara. The couple decided to open a studio in New York where they taught until the late 1960s.

The Pilates method, which he and Clara named ‘Contrology,’ was quickly adopted and followed by many dancers and performers.
